Computer professionals often argue over car analogies, but I am going invoke a car metaphor on computer maintenance! It is well known that cars need scheduled maintenance, so we change the oil every once in awhile. Your car manual even has a checklist of maintenance items that need attention and when they should be replaced or inspected. Your computer is no different.

A basic checklist should include

  • Keeping your computer up to date on security patches
  • Have a good backup.... a backup that is Offsite and most importantly Tested!
  • Following up on system errors or disk errors
  • Have up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware software

Some thoughts on computer replacements...

  • Computer replacement can be somewhat variable but a good rule of thumb is between 3-5 years of age.
  • Cheap laptops are especially prone to needing quicker replacements if you drag it around town.
  • If you are a road warrior, a good $1,000+ laptop is likely to last a few more years and be faster than a $600 to $800 laptop.
  • A modern desktop can definitely make it to the 5 year mark as long as it is a reputable make and kept up with scheduled maintenance.
